Pearl Care
Cultured
pearls are soft compared to other gemstones, so it is important
to take special care of them to ensure they will remain beautiful
and in good condition for generations to come.
Cosmetics, fragrances, and hairsprays all contain chemicals
that can dull the luster of a pearl and eventually damage it.
Also perspiration and the acids in body oils react the same
way. Substances containing vinegar, bleach, and chlorine should
absolutely be avoided.
It is best to put your pearls on after applying all of your beauty products, and
when you take them off, gently wipe with a soft, non-treated cloth. A damp cloth
may be used if necessary.
Remove before swimming, bathing, or hand washing.
Store your pearls in a soft, ventilated environment and away from other hard
pieces of jewelry. A cloth pouch or lined jewelry box is best. Avoid storing
them in plastic containers for any length of time as they may become dry and
brittle without any moisture.
If you wear your knotted pearl strands often, it is recommended that they be
re-strung every year or two. Over time the silk thread will stretch and may become weak resulting
in a breakage. However, if you wear them only occasionally every year or two may not
be necessary.
When you do have them re-strung, request silk
thread and that the pearls be individually knotted. This will prevent them from scattering
should the thread break. It also keeps them from rubbing against
one another.
Taking these extra measures of care will give your cultured pearl jewelry lasting life and you endless years of luxurious enjoyment!
